The right flag size is not just a question of how big you want the flag to look. On an outdoor flagpole you have to consider the height of the pole and the load the wind puts on it. For a facade flag, what matters is the length and angle of the bracket pole, the mounting height and the free space around the flag.
For indoor stands, the key factors are proportion and the size of the room; for desk flags, it is visibility and the space available on the desk or conference table.
That is why there is no single “correct” size for every situation.
In this guide we look at the four most common uses:

Quick answer: choosing a size at a glance
| Place of use | Recommended size |
|---|---|
| Desk / conference table | 15 × 21 cm |
| Indoor stand, approx. 200–220 cm | 90 × 135 cm / 100 × 150 cm |
| Small facade / shop / house | 60 × 90 cm |
| Prominent facade / hotel / institution | 90 × 135 cm |
| Outdoor flagpole, approx. 3 m | 50 × 75 cm / 60 × 90 cm |
| Outdoor flagpole, approx. 4 m | 60 × 90 cm / 90 × 135 cm |
| Outdoor flagpole, approx. 5 m | 90 × 135 cm / 100 × 150 cm |
| Outdoor flagpole, approx. 6 m | 100 × 150 cm |
| Outdoor flagpole, 7–8 m | 140 × 210 cm |
| Outdoor flagpole, 9–12 m | 200 × 300 cm |
Treat the table as a practical starting point. For outdoor flagpoles, always check the technical limits of the specific pole and the conditions at the installation site as well.

01What flag size should I choose for an outdoor flagpole?
For a standard horizontal flag flown from a vertical outdoor flagpole, there is a simple rule of thumb.
The length of the flag should be roughly between 1/4 and 1/3 of the height of the pole. This proportion looks balanced in most standard set-ups.

Size guide for outdoor flagpoles
| Flagpole height | Recommended sizes |
|---|---|
| 3 m | 50 × 75 cm / 60 × 90 cm |
| 4 m | 60 × 90 cm / 90 × 135 cm |
| 5 m | 90 × 135 cm / 100 × 150 cm |
| 6 m | 100 × 150 cm |
| 7–8 m | 140 × 210 cm |
| 9–12 m | 200 × 300 cm |
A quarter of 6 m is 1.5 m, so a flag about 150 cm long is very well proportioned for a 6 m pole.
The 100 × 150 cm size is a practical choice: it is clearly visible without looking oversized next to the pole.
In a sheltered spot you can go bigger, if the pole’s technical specifications allow it. In windier conditions, the smaller size is often the better choice.
Why not simply choose the biggest flag?
A bigger flag is more visible, but it also has a larger surface for the wind to act on.
That increases the load on:
- the flag itself
- the seams
- the snap hooks or grommets
- the halyard
- the flagpole mechanism
- the flagpole
- the base and foundation
So “bigger” does not automatically mean “better”. What you want is a balance between visibility, proportion, durability and safety.
Does the flagpole’s location matter?
Yes – a great deal. A 6 m flagpole in a sheltered courtyard and one of the same height in open ground do not work in the same conditions.
When choosing, take into account:
- an open or sheltered location
- the average wind speed
- tall buildings nearby
- a coastal or mountain area
- the distance from which the flag needs to be seen
- the material and weight of the flag
In very windy, exposed locations, choose a size from the lower end of the recommended range.

02What size should I choose for a facade flag?
For a facade flag, do not apply the 1/4–1/3 flagpole rule automatically. The reason is simple: a facade bracket pole is usually much shorter than an outdoor flagpole, it may be mounted at an angle, and it is often close to windows, balconies, awnings or other parts of the building.

For a facade flag, consider:
- the length of the bracket pole
- the mounting angle
- the height above the ground
- the size of the facade
- the free space around the flag
- the distance it needs to be seen from
- exposure to wind
60 × 90 cm
A practical size for smaller facades, shops, houses, balconies and low mounting heights.
90 × 135 cm
A stronger visual presence, suited to hotels, office buildings, public institutions, larger entrances and prominent facades.
With a facade system, the flag size also has to suit the bracket pole and the facade holder you use. If you want everything in one box, the kit with a 90 × 135 cm flag, metal pole and wall bracket is ready to mount.
Before you buy, check not only the flag size but also how it will look against the facade when it is fully unfurled.
03What size should I choose for an indoor flag stand?
Indoors, wind is no longer the main factor. What matters much more is:
- the height of the stand
- the size of the room
- the ceiling height
- the distance to furniture and walls
- whether there will be one flag or several
- the visual effect you want

For prominent indoor flag stands around 200–220 cm tall, suitable sizes are:
90 × 135 cm
A balance between a strong enough visual presence and easy handling. Suits offices, conference rooms, receptions and institutions.
100 × 150 cm
A stronger visual presence. Suits larger spaces, high-ceilinged rooms, official halls and prominent entrances.
60 × 90 cm
Suits smaller rooms, or a stand placed close to furniture or a wall.
These are visual and practical recommendations, not technical limits. Always take the construction of the specific stand into account.
One flag or two?
Institutions, hotels and conference rooms often use two flags – for example Romania + the European Union.
When the two stands are identical, or the flags share a double stand, we recommend flags of the same size. For example: Romania 90 × 135 cm + EU 90 × 135 cm, or Romania 100 × 150 cm + EU 100 × 150 cm.
This gives a more balanced, more professional look.
04What size should I choose for a desk flag?
For desks and conference tables, the standard size we recommend most often is 15 × 21 cm.
It is visible enough without taking up too much space.

It suits:
- executive offices
- receptions
- conference tables
- official meetings
- negotiations
- hotels
- institutions
- corporate gifts
- national, European and custom company flags
This type of flag can be used with desk flag holders for:
- 1 flag
- 2 flags
- 4 flags
- 8 or more flags, depending on the holder
One desk flag or two?
A company office can use a national flag or a company flag.
For international meetings, a very fitting combination is the Romanian flag + the partner country’s flag, or Romania + the European Union.
With two or more flags, it is best for all of them to share the same format and size, so they look like a set.
05Does viewing distance matter?
Yes. The size should match not only the stand or pole, but also the distance it will be seen from.
A 60 × 90 cm flag can look very good in front of a small shop or on a facade seen from a few metres away. The same flag may look too small if it has to be noticed from a busy road tens of metres away.
The greater the distance, the bigger both the flag and the mounting system need to be. The two should be chosen in proportion – not simply a large flag on a small holder.
06Does the material matter?
Yes. The size determines the surface the wind acts on, while the material affects the weight, movement and behaviour of the flag. For outdoor use, weigh these together:
- size
- fabric weight
- density
- UV resistance
- reinforcement of the fly end
- fixing method
- wind strength

A larger, heavier flag can put significantly more load on the pole and the fixings. For indoor and desk flags these factors matter less, and the look and correct proportion come first.

07Should the Romanian and EU flags be the same size?
When the flags stand side by side on identical flagpoles or identical indoor stands, we recommend the same size.
For example: Romania 100 × 150 cm + EU 100 × 150 cm, or Romania 15 × 21 cm + EU 15 × 21 cm on desk holders.
That way the whole arrangement looks balanced and professional. See the Romania + EU 90 × 135 cm outdoor set and all European Union flags.

08The most common sizing mistakes
Choosing the biggest flag possible
A bigger flag is not always a better fit. Outdoors, it increases the wind load.
Looking only at the flagpole height
Location matters too – open ground, a facade between buildings and a sheltered courtyard can have completely different conditions.
Sizing a facade flag by the flagpole rules
Facade systems have a different geometry and need to be considered separately.
Ignoring the size of the room
An indoor flag that is too large can look out of proportion in a small room.
Using different sizes for flags placed side by side
When the systems are identical, identical sizes usually give a more professional result.
Forgetting the viewing distance
Choose the size according to the distance from which the flag must be easy to recognise.
Frequently asked questions
What flag size suits a 6 m flagpole?
For many standard applications, 100 × 150 cm is a well-balanced choice. Depending on the specific pole, the location and the wind, another size within the permitted range can also work.
What is the standard size of a desk flag?
For desk holders, Premium Flags most often uses and recommends 15 × 21 cm.
What flag size suits a facade?
The most common sizes are 60 × 90 cm and 90 × 135 cm, but the choice should depend on the length of the bracket pole, the mounting angle, the size of the facade and the free space.
What flag size suits an indoor stand?
For tall, prominent stands of around 200–220 cm, 90 × 135 cm is a balanced size, while 100 × 150 cm gives a stronger visual presence in larger rooms.
Can I fly a bigger flag on an outdoor flagpole?
Only if the flagpole and the mounting system allow it. A bigger flag creates a higher load in windy conditions.
Should the Romanian and EU flags be the same size?
When they are displayed side by side on identical stands or flagpoles, we recommend the same size for a more balanced presentation.
How do I choose if I am not sure?
Send us:
- the height or type of the pole or stand
- where it will be installed
- the flag you want
- a photo of the location, if needed
We can then recommend the right size and fixing method.
Conclusion
The right size is the one that works well with the specific pole or stand and the place where it is installed.
For outdoor flagpoles we look for a balance between proportion, visibility and wind load. On facades, the size has to suit the bracket pole and the architecture. Indoors, proportion and a dignified look come first, and for desks 15 × 21 cm is a practical standard for most uses.
